This video focuses on one of the most amazing octopuses that you will find. We are talking about the blanket octopus.

In this footage, it is clear how this particular octopus got its name. As it gently swims just above the seafloor you can see how the webbing between its outermost arms ripples as it moves.

It does not take too far of a stretch of the imagination to picture the octopus’ outstretched webbing as a cape — a superhero’s cape.

Then again, considering all of the amazing qualities and attributes of not just the blanket octopus, but all octopuses, in a way it can be said that they are already superheroes. Incredibly intelligent, endowed with amazing eyesight, and possessing sensory capabilities throughout its a body — yeah, that does sound like the introduction to an underwater superhero.

As the video footage continues it also provides you with an idea of how large this particular blanket octopus is. When the human diver comes into the frame it is easy to gauge the length of the blanket octopus by comparing it to the diver. This blanket octopus is approximately 6 feet in length.

To the passive observer, the blanket octopus might be confused for a squid due to the shape of its head. However, rest assured, that the blanket octopus is 100% octopus. Underneath that webbing, there are eight arms just like all other octopus species.

Since the blanket octopus prefers to hang out in mid-water and near the surface in sub-tropical regions, the chances of one day spotting one of these underwater superheroes for yourself is quite decent. If one day you happen to be scuba diving and you spot a caped cephalopod approaching, do not despair, it is just “superoctopus.”

Oh, and one more thing — if you do spot a blanket octopus you can be certain that it will be a female. You see, male blanket octopuses measure only inches whereas the females take on lengths measured in feet, just like the one in the video.
